How I Choose The Roborock S8 Pro Ultra
I never thought I would get a robot vacuum! It seemed like an unnecessary extravagance. Boy, was I wrong!
As I began my research, the only thing I knew about were products from another company. The name of this company rhymes with Zoomba! As I dug deeper into online reviews, there was consensus about two things:
- That company with the catchy name only makes products that are….crap!
- Roborock was the only company to look at.
Easy enough, now it was time to get started. First thought: I AM PAYING HOW MUCH FOR A …..VACCUM???
Roborock makes a lot of different models. The S8 Pro Ultra I have is almost $1400 at the time of writing!! One of the reasons I like this model was all of the automation of tasks it offered. So, I decided to look past the price (as best I could) and kept researching.
You can get a robot vacuum from Roborock for a little over $300. As you can guess, the more you pay, the more features you get. You just have to decide for yourself what features are important to you.
Design and Build Quality of the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra
The Roborock S8 Pro Ultra boasts a sleek and modern design. Its low profile allows it to easily navigate under furniture. The build quality feels premium, with high-quality materials used throughout.
The robot vacuum comes in a classic black color, which looks elegant in any home setting. This is the color I went with. Not that the color I chose makes a lot of difference in this Roborock review:)
Setup
When I read a Roborock review, I often heard horror stories about setting up the unit. These were usually about getting it connected to your home network.
This is necessary to let it speak to the Roborock App. The app is where you do almost all of the work of controlling the vacuum.
In my case, I had no issues and the setup went very smoothly. I cannot say why that is nor why others have issues.
I guess I would chalk it up to the problem of multiple pieces of tech having to work together. So in that regard, this issue may be frustrating but not all that unusual.
Cleaning Performance of Roborock S8 Pro Ultra

I hope it goes without saying that the robot cannot do any more than move around on flat surfaces. So, if you have a multi-level home, the robot is not going to go up and down the stairs.
That might seem like an obvious part of any Roborock review. When paying this much though, I want to make sure you know what you are getting!!
If you use the vacuum where it cannot proceed back to the dock, it will send you a message. You then have to pick it up and place it on the same level as the dock. This happens when you use it on a level that the dock is not on.
You can then hit the vacuum’s home button, and it will head back to the dock. Of course, you will need to pick it up and take it to the other level to begin with. I know this all sounds obvious, but again, I want to be clear about how it works.
Even if you have a multi-level home, there is no need to buy one of these for each level. Moving it back and forth is a piece of cake.
Ease of Use
One of the reasons I chose the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra is how “hands-off” it is. It has a clean and dirty water tank. It also has a dust bin with an integrated dust bag.
When it docks, it cleans the mop and empties the dust bin. You can also have it do this manually.
Before it mops, it fills up with cleaning solution (water mixed with their cleaning formula). It also cleans the mophead before it starts moping. When it is done moping and docked, it empties the tank into the dirty reservoir.
This may seem like an extravagance. You can pay for a lower model and do some of these things yourself.
If you are in the market for a robot vacuum, it is precisely because you do not want to do any of this. When you don’t have to, I think you will find you are using the robot a lot more.
The Mop
One thing to note here in this Roborock review is the moping function. It does a fine job of getting up far more dust on non-carpeted floors than vacuuming alone. That said, it is not “scrubbing” the floor.
So as an example, I had a drop of pancake batter that fell on the floor during cooking and dried. The Roborock did not get that up. It is not going to vacuum up large pieces of debris. It is also not going to “mop up” anything too substantial.
